Q - What camera did you use for Cameras and Coffee?
A. - Canon EOS Rebel T7i
Q. How long have you been taking photos?
A. I’ve been taking photos for as long as I can remember. At the age of 7, I got a Fisher Price camera, and my love of photography has only ever grown as I’ve gotten older.
Q. Why did you start photography?
A . I started photography because I’ve always been a curious person, and using a camera was the best way I knew how to explore the world. Image-making is how I express myself, and it’s how I capture small glimpses of life that I think are worth remembering.
Q. What motivates you when it comes to photography?
A. When it comes to photography, I’m motivated by the fact that there will always be something to learn. It’s a really challenging art form, and I think a lot of people don’t realize that.
Q. Describe your photography style.
A. Truthfully, I don’t know the answer to this yet. I love portraiture and architecture. I love bright colors and black and white. I love geometry and juxtaposition. I love storytelling and documentary. What I’m working on now is trying to break away from the mold of just shooting for assignments and paid jobs, so that I can spend time making art for myself to figure out what my authentic style is.
Q. Explain your Instagram name.
A. I came up with cjwillphotography when I was 15. I’ve experimented with different variations of my name to brand my photography, but I think this one had the best ring to it. People have always called me CJ since I was little, and it fits my personality well. Williams was a bit too long though, so I shortened it.
Q. What are your photo goals for the next year?
A. My photo goals for the next year are to be more intentional and commit to learning technical concepts that will push my art-making forward. I want to take the time to consider the patterns that I’ve subconsciously chosen when it comes to the subject matter. I also want to become more comfortable with my camera and post-production in general.
