Kalik Jones
Scott: What is the meaning behind your DJ name?
Kalik: Really, it’s as simple as it sounds. I created my DJ after the philosopher Confucius; not necessarily from a person I wanted but more from ideals/values I’ve always tried to live by. Of course, he’s most famous for the Golden Rule. For me, it’s one of his many quotes about the appreciation of life. I’ll paraphrase without checking Google, but it goes “We all live two lives, until we realize that we only have one.” As a DJ Konfucious represents more of the life I feel I’m destined for outside of it just being my “side hobby” Right now I’m living two lives, but I get closer and closer each day to living the one life that was meant for me. If you could open up for one musical act, who would it be and why? Folamour. I shape a lot of my sets around his “seamless” sets that are full of transitions where you can barely notice what’s happened until it’s too late. At hay point, you are already lost in the melody.
Scott: What have you learned over the last year as a DJ?
Kalik: To focus more on the craft, and not trying to be recognized. I understand the importance of having a presence online, but that hinders how creative I can get with my sets. I focus too much on performing, than progressing as a DJ.
Scott: Describe why music is important to you.
Kalik: Music is the common denominator for us to be able to get along all. We all recognize when we hear something good. During these times, it’s nice to be associated with a trend in which people of all ages just want to go and listen to music that makes them feel good. The outside world controlled by people with self-interest intentions is enough to deal with. Music takes us all away from that. At least the music where the intentions are to just connect.
Scott: What is your dream venue to perform at?
Kalik: SpotLite, I’ve done it once already, but it’s the spot that embodies exactly what I mentioned in the previous question. Each time I go there, there are ppl from all walks of life there just to listen to good music. It’s a completely welcoming environment for anyone that walks through the doors to promote the album.
Scott: Do you have any rituals or routines before you perform?
Kalik: Not really, but I’m at my best when I have a Nervous Negroni from Spkrbox. The name alone makes sense prior to a set.
Scott: What are your goals for the next year?
Kalik: Continue to fuck it up, and find my tribe.
